Old & Historical Game Data

Submitted by Management 7/4/2012 5:48:00 PM {time} ago

This is an open letter to anyone who has old game data/stats that may be sitting around on an old computer/hard drive/etc. Anything. Historical Game data. (any kind, in any format) Fan fiction. Fan Websites. Battle calculators. Artwork. Tutorials. Help texts. etc. If it adds to the lore or history of Evernight, we want it. We want to hear from you. At the moment, our holy grail of data recovery is the Library of Midia. If anyone anywhere can help us track down and recover a significant portion of the library's data, you will forever earn yourself recognition in Evernight's halls of heroic contributors. .

I have quite ab it of old game data, though I will have to dig it up. Get me an e-mail address and I will see what I can send.
Waterdios had a web site, but I think its gone. I had a VB app that tracked player changes daily and game data daily, but I haven't used it extensively in a few years..
I had tried to capture every game for a very long time, but once it broke and I missed a few months, the missed information made statistical reporting much less interesting...

Yes.
We definitely want any and all historical game/player data you may still have laying around.
We know there are going to be big holes in the data and there's nothing we can do about that except try to fill them in as best we can.

Subject Tome of Rning v 1.2 available From Rning Date Posted 09/16/2010 Thread Tome of Rning v 1.2 available
The Tome of Rning is now available again for download:
http://rning.webs.com/downloads.htm
It might have a problem with font display, but I need some feedback (screen shots from the Index page?) from different computers before I can find out what needs fixing.
This link should replace the defunct Geocities address for the "Tome of Rning" under "Links."
Also, I noticed that most of the links in the "Links" section of the lobby are broken. Arrakeeen's Battle Book looks like it is there at first, but any attempt to access anything results in SQL errors from missing servers.

Subject History of EN part 1 From snort Date Posted 10/04/2009 Thread 10 years of EN
I suppose this is a good place to repost this again. I do it from time to time to keep everyone in the loop of history. This was originally posted by Elrad a few years back. There are 4 parts:
SNIP: Here is a little snippet into the History of EN (or what of it I know/remember)
1999 - VR-1 (creator of Ultra Corps) creates a little game called Evernight. The idea is to create a massive online risk-like game with spells. Initially there were going to be races (Crusaders, Rip Lizards, Glow etc were each going to be a different race)
Lao Tzu was the guy in charge, Lord Foul was the main programmer (and basically doing all the tech support, bug fixing, etc throughout the beta stage, theories that he had 3 clones of himself working around the clock were common). There were other people involved too (check the credits).
What did the game look like then? Well Sacrifice was called a T-Check and cost 200 fury (and gave you a 100% return) sucker man affected forms (that didn’t last long heh) and most of the spells were very different from how they are now. There was no rating system, there were no custom games (aside from he programmers tweaking the parameters manually) and the community was very small (maybe around 50 at any one time?)
January 2000 Elrad (me) joins EN, as do many others, this marks the first wave of new players. (All ancient by today’s standards) rumors are that this is an old player with a new name. (Probably because of placing in the top 3 in all his first few games). Back then the only victory option was 3 winners. The community is still small (60-70 or so active players?). The book of Zolton is written (which survives to this day) but already evernight is starting to look more and more like it does now as far as playability. Although many things are still different, plains are worth 10T, all other regions 5 (or was it 2?) mtns and water (I may be wrong on this) are 0. Magma Deamons and Woodens are 100 and 125 to summon respectfully, and have a worse xp progression (each considered to be equally crappy). Dragons are the dominant forms. Multiple Glow types have yet to be introduced...and the maximum games running at any one time are in the 2-4 range.
When I joined there were 5 super players. Rning/Saotome Ranma each had taken an extended break. (Only rning would return during that summer). Zolton, Lord Foul, and Macros the Black were still around though...their presence during that time inspired awe that I can't imagine possible today . (These three guys, and rning, had several victories, while at the time almost no one else had even 1). Those early beta games where highly competitive...and close knit.
Summer 2000 Rning returns and the rivalry between him and Elrad begins. The player base grows to about 100 active players. (People are coming and going every day, that was just roughly how many were around at one time. or by my best guess anyway). Games in general are very brutal...many are size 60-90; epic battles that span games ensued. People make common friends and common foes...to some extent the battle groups are similar from game to game, but there are always wild cards everywhere. Many of the moderate/advanced strategies start getting formulated and perfected (much based on those which Rning/Saotome/others first thought of, and which Zolton wrote for prosperity). Thinks like fury farming, suckerman sliding, and sacrifice spells were becoming standardized strategies by the learned players (but new players were still much in the dark, and each top dog had his or her own version of the really advanced tricks). Calculators didn’t exist; people used paper and pencil instead. (Rning had a spreadsheet he used). A good buddy of mine, Strobetal (joined EN at the same time as me) created the first EN calculator. A lesser vs. lesser version in Quick Basic, and an overly complex C++ version that did multiple forms/combatants (the latter was unusable to anyone that didn’t know C++). A big debate raged on as far as if Calculators were fair (the argument was that everyone should have one). However Rning and his inner ring, and Elrad (me) and my inner ring weren’t so eager to give up our secret technology just yet. (Did it make a difference? Probably) around this time many of the changes to form statistics, spell statistics, and otherwise were being made to the game. This was the beginning of a golden age.
(More coming soon)
Subject re: History of EN part 2 From snort Date Posted 10/04/2009 Thread History of EN part 1
SNIP: (Continuation of my history posts)
The beta is coming to an end, but little does anyone know. There is one important game that is historic for several reasons (although I am a little bias ļ )
Fall 2000 I post an idea in the newsgroups for a "famine" type game where regions are worth much less. (Plains are 4, dunes 3, swamp 2, etc). This is a very historic game for many many reasons.
First, it is the first game where Rning and I decide to put our rivalry aside and try something new (no diplomacy and no communication with ANYONE by either of us till the end game, basically a double due of the two greats vs. the world). This however was complicated by two factors. First we did not border each other, and 2nd...I ended up breaking the agreement by making peace with two neighbors at around tick 20. (I suspected that Rning had broken it first, but in retrospect it was I that was the first to do it, the one at fault). We ended up fighting each other...but by then I was already too powerful.
Secondly it was Picmans first game. Picman at the time was some no name newbie who had been beaten pretty badly by an advanced player called Hardluck. Hardluck was bringing in around 200T while Picman was down to about 40T at his low point. He did manage to conjure up some four Magma Deamons. Hardluck was my biggest rival at the time for winning the game, but was too far for me to affect...so I intervened as an advisor on Picmans behalf. If you have ever read my work titled "tips for the underdog" Picman must have used all of them. (I would basically analyze his battles and tell him from what Hardluck was likely to do, and what his best options were). A combination of my advice, Picmans own potential, Hardlucks underestimation of Picmans skill (and the fact I was involved) as well as an astounding amount of bad luck for Hardluck (and good luck for Picman) turned the situation around. Picman (in that game) became my right-hand man, and would recover to a size second only to mine. Little did I know that Picman was the top manager of Real Arcade at Real Networks that had been invited by VR1 to check out Evernight. He fell in love with the game instantly and Real agreed to market Evernight as a premier game on Real Arcade. Who knows what would have happened had Hardluck crushed Picman in that game...we can only speculate
Finally it was the game I am most famous for, where I drew my name in BB¡¦s. Given the low resource nature of the game, it was harder for anyone to end the game. I kept gunning for any player that became big enough to potentially cast an endgame BB (there was no fury gifting mind you). Before I knew it, I owned enough of the world to take 1st by myself, but why stop there? I thought, maybe I can conquer the ENTIRE world¡Khas anyone done that before? The game was basically over by tick 30ish but between 30-55 I kept conquering. I made many enemies by doing this as I basically robbed each from a 2nd, or 3rd place finish as I went down the line taking on everyone. (In part I also wanted to help picman get 2nd, who helped me get to 1st in the first place) around tick 55 however I learned from lord foul that the rumor of a max tick at 75 was true. With 20 ticks left I realized there was not enough time to conquer the entire world (one idea of mine was to teraform all of it into black betweens, eternal darkness). However with only 20 ticks to work with I started saving up resources, and began what I believe to be my 2nd greatest accomplishment in EN ƒº
this game would be one of the final ones of the old Beta.
Subject re: History of EN part 3 From snort Date Posted 10/04/2009 Thread re: History of EN part 2
SNIP: (continuation of my EN history series)
Somewhere around the first few months of 2001 the new EN site is created (the one that runs the game now). It looked like a face lifted version of the old one on steroids (the old site was much darker; there were no light grey colors). After a last push for game balance changes the beta was declared over, and everyone started from the beginning. The game had not officially been released yet (It was not until May that the game went live on the Real Networks site, where a considerable advertising campaign began, and subscriptions were first put into place.
This first half of 2001 would be quite different. Since the player base began to grow at such a rapid rate many of the advanced players sought less to compete with each other and turned more to helping new players. The beta was over; as far as we were concerned the ¡§ultimate showdown¡¨ had been completed. Rning and I would forever debate who won the beta ƒº (his claim is more xp, mine is more victories etc). It was a humanitarian age; the waves of new players were coming in far more quickly than ever before. We, the ¡§beta guys¡¨ now looked to the future of EN rather than our own. A guy named MaoTseTung made the first official public calculator, following this many (until then secret) ones started to appear, and in general there was a big movement to create the biggest and baddest calculator ever. I may be wrong but I believe this is around the time that BlueSky joined (those early days of the new EN). It took a bit for the humanitarian movement to fully hit me, but when it did I began what I still consider to be my biggest accomplishment in EN (As well as my biggest contribution). Elrads.com.
Elrads.com launched at around the same time the new EN officially became public (around May of 2001). Zolton told everyone his site (which was his book) was coming down and it needed a new home. I took it upon myself to find a new host for it, but as I started to edit the book (to account for the many game changes that happened since the day it was written) I found myself adding more and more strategies into it. Then I decided, heck, I¡¦ll just go all out. When I created Elrads.com the style was much the same as it is now (nergals.com). But the content and sheer mass was nothing compared to what it is now. Back then all I had was Zoltons Book (very important) a tome of Scrolls (where other strategies were to be added) Immortal Champions (my attempt to immortalize the beta ancients, that section remains exactly as it was, since then Gackmasta pulled off quite a feat in expanding the idea to the current community, the whole database thing was beyond anything I had done). The Forms of Legends section (which had remained largely incomplete) and finally a Press Page where I would post links to the sites that supported/advertised EN, as far as other fan sites as they popped up (As I was creating the site I e-mailed the head of MMPOG and convinced them to add EN to their database, at the time it seemed like a minor thing considering EN¡¦s publicity lie mainly through Real/VR1, but im glad I did it).
This is also around the time I created Lies and Sighs; initially it was designed to move the many bickering I had with Rning out of the General newsgroups ƒº (we flamed each other, in a pseudo mutually respecting way, quite a bit). It soon evolved into the general spot for all argument rooted threads ƒº (seems like the tradition lives to this day). I also Created Nergal¡¦s Tavern under a name that never played a game (Nergal the Mad). Some other ancient newsgroups include Chatter (Macros the Black) and Real world Politics (River, who back in the beta days used to be called River__, such an awesome guy¡K)
Anyway, the next section will be my final days of EN (the 6 months us betas were given free after the game went live in may 2001)
Subject re: History of EN part 4 From snort Date Posted 10/04/2009 Thread re: History of EN part 3
SNIP: By august of 2001 EN was seeing some 200-250 people logged in at any one time. Elrads.com was getting 50-100 hits a day, and all was good. New players would actively join games and seek the advanced players for advice or recognition, us older folks would eagerly aid them, and toast with each other about the good old times. A few clans sprung up and were quickly beaten back. Things were good ƒº (even though there was a class of us betas that dominated for a while, elitism was not at all a big word as we often grabbed a newbie ender each arm and fought it off with each other.) Gackmasta joined me I believe it was around august in helping me run Elrads.com. He had some crazy ideas that were, frankly, almost beyond my ability to even fathom so the site maintenance/expansion became more and more his initiative. (We changed the name to Madnergal.com, and the site went through an overhaul. While on the outside it still looks very similar, on the inside the endless depth of Databases and content is all gackmasta). When I left EN (fall of 2001) It was a hard time for everyone, the stock market slump and the recession cost many their jobs. The tech market was hit worst and I recall Real Networks cut 1/3rd of their work force in a few weeks alone. VR1 itself was also losing important people, many that had designed EN no longer worked for VR1. It was still strong however, even though many of the beta players had moved on (most would pop back in here and there) a whole new generation had thrived (I take it that generation is you guys?). By fall Gackmasta had taken pretty much full control of what was by then MadNergal.com and started majorly expanding it. Many other sites popped up too (I only remember them in their infant stages so I can¡¦t comment too much on them).
But there are many gaps in my history, I Invite anyone to fill in/amend any of it, and especially in adding to the 2001-2004 time period! I popped back for about a week back in 2003 but after joining several games had to go inactive in all of them as an extended business trip to Europe took priority.
Also, some additional notes for all my histories. Phiasc0 appeared right as the new EN was launched, and did an awesome job taking over Lord Fouls job of running EN behind the curtainƒº. (To my best knowledge Lord Foul went on to another project, as EN was pretty much completed). River, who still seems to be around, is possibly the oldest player out of anyone I¡¦ve seen since I¡¦ve been back (he was in EN slightly before I was, and was an Ultra Corps pro back in the day. Ultra Corps of course being VR1¡¦s pre-EN online game. It was quite different but cool in its own right). I also saw Hardluck, hes an old dog too! Subject re: History of EN Gack addendum From snort Date Posted 10/04/2009 Thread re: History of EN part 4
Actuall I had this in with those files as well so I guess there were 5 parts.
I noticed when I read this how Gack took over madnergal from Elrad so this refers to the other history thread about the Mad Nergal site as well
SNIP: EN History-Gackmasta addition part 1
Gackmasta wrote:
HOpefully someone will archive this, maybe snort wherever he archived the original...
Gnascher found the game at Real, I have no idea what he was doing there or what led him down the path.
We were working together on weekend construction projects at the time and after a long day swinging a hammer, we'd settle into the newsgroups and pass the time. When I took the helm of MadNergal.com from Elrad, I had some ideas, some pretty radical ideas, some of which were questionable in the eyes of VR1, but I don't think they really cared because they were already in discussion with Jaleco for a sellout, not so much for EN, but for their other project. I think it was a plane game? I forget... Anyway, if not for Gnascher, half of what is there would not have existed. But we fed off each other, and Donk's addition to the game furthered our cause. We enjoyed the community and along with a few others, like Wyrmmlore, Sharkbitefisher and Stargrace, really lit a flame in the kitchen of Nergal's Tavern.
We spent a lot of time bantering with Phiasc0 and Lord Foul. At the time Waterdios and Bluesky were also quite prominent in aiding the community. I think those two badgered Phiasc0 and LF more than I did. Waterdios cut his programming PHP teeth on thelibraryofmidia.com, I remember long email chains back and forth with him on tutorials and code snippets. He did a great job, but looking back on some of the script, i wish i gave him better snippets. I was one of the first non-beta "player admins". This meant i could create a game, had access to some stat info and could modify a few things. I believe River, Elrad and Rning all had similar access at the time. Bluesky and Waterdios were right behind me.
Dranden first hit the scene with an astounding ability to crush all opposition, i'm still not sure how he did it, though I believe it was all about playing only a couple games at a time. He set up his Bio at MadNergal and popped the idea behind having a place where people could share their talents. Amazingly enough, the section is now called "shared talents" under Community at MadNergal.com. Around the same time we lit up the Forms section and made some ties into The Library of Midia.
There was a lot of talk about rumors with the buyout and of course, the rumors turned out to be true. No matter Phiasc0's foundations that "nothing will change", it did. Money is money and business is business and it was determined by the big, fat parent Jaleco, that EN was a hole in their gaming empire that was just sucking down money and earning no revenue (they were, of course, correct).
Dranden and Maximus Prime would have to step in here to discuss the way they finagled buying the code, but end all be all is that they teamed up with Waterdios and bought Evernight!
